Unit 2: The Big Bang

OER Project Unit 2

13.7 billion years ago, all the molecular material came together in space and time in a way that no one can even imagine or describe, the conditions of density and temperature were optimal to cause the Bang! In a few thousandths of a second, the universe expanded at an inconceivable speed.

From that expansion, some subatomic particles and fundamental forces controlling their interaction were formed. Then the universe cooled dramatically, about 1 billion degrees Celsius, allowing energy and matter to appear. It was much later, when it reached 1650 degrees Celsius, that the first hydrogen and helium atoms were formed.

Goldilock / Living Zone

The definition of "Goldilocks / Habitable Zone" is the distance to a star from an orbiting planet in which liquid water could exist on its surface. "Habitable zones" are also known as Goldilocks zones (Stephen Hawkins used the story to make an analogy), where conditions may be optimal - neither too hot nor too cold - for living conditions.
